DO YOU DARE?
The world as we know it is changing, and it is happening so fast that we can hardly keep up anymore. The future is no longer in the days to come; it’s all around us. A number of social and digital trends are emerging all across the globe, and their consequences will have such a profound impact on the world that we will never recognize it again.
This trendspotting explores what is happening all around us—and more importantly, what will happen. These are changes that will not only alter the way we perceive the world, but also our very place in it. Truth as we know it today, will completely change; learning and education will undergo its greatest paradigm shift in millennia; and there will be so much money to be made on the future that business will never look the same again.

This year’s trendspotting examines the global impact of four social trends: demographic growth, automation, escalated immigration & populism; and four digital trends: social media, video media, mobile & digital data. The synergy between these eight trends engender three major, global consequences for mankind: for our perception of truth, for education & learning and for business.
VIDEO MEDIA RISING
With 90% of all information transmitted to our brain being visual, it is small wonder video media is on the rise. Images are processed 60.000 times faster than text, and a single minute of video is worth 1.8 million words. But this is just scratching the surface. When AR (Augmented Reality) is brought into the fold, video media will take its rightful place as king of the future. We will toggle back and forth between real life, AR and VR so seamlessly we will literally become addicted to these digital extensions of our realities.
DATA — THE HEART OF THE DIGITAL ECOSYSTEM
Augmented Reality may very well be the face of the future, but the mastermind behind everything will be data. Our worlds will be utterly personalized by hyper-intelligent AI’s in combination with the virtual zettabytes of digital data left behind by the inhabitants of an Internet that will soon permeate almost every aspect of our lives.
MOBILE — THE GREAT ENABLER
The Internet has made this enormous Earth so much smaller and accessible, and when the smartphone revolution began to really take root in the world, the number of people with access to the Internet went through the roof. That trend is hardly likely to dwindle as the next generation of the mobile phone emerges – Augmented Reality. With AR glasses (and eventually lenses and even digital retinas) we will effectively live our entire lives digitally, online and highly mobile. Inaccessibility will be a thing of the past, our exposure will be total, and our immersion perfect and seamless… and absolutely, unrelentingly addictive.

SOCIAL MEDIA THE NEWS ANCHOR
People putting more faith in what people post on social media than what actual news media report makes for fertile soil for fake news, mudslinging and downright propaganda to grow in. Who shares a story matters more to people than who wrote it. But how about source criticism and fact-checking? Such things are neglected when the number of likes, shares, retweets and comments are so important that companies have commercialized the whole concept.
AUTOMATION — A TOUGH COMPETITOR ON THE JOB MARKET
Driverless cars, marketing automation, IoT, AI—these are all things that conspire to forever change the job market as we know it. A McKinsey study found that 49% of the activities people are paid to do can be automated… with “currently demonstrated technology”. Suffice it to say, when artificial intelligence finally reaches its tipping point, it’s probably safe to bet on those 49% growing rather aggressively.
POPULISTIC PROSPERITY, AN EXPANDING POPULATION, AND 65 MILLION ON THE RUN
The Arab Spring. Environmental exiles. Mass emigration of elderlies. Internal displacement. And wars. Wars and bloody conflicts by the score. The effects of these 65 million displaced people are rippling across the globe. Meanwhile, the global demography is changing as people are getting older and older. Already limited resources grow scarcer by the day, and amid all these global and local conflicts, populistic forces thrive, using the refugees as perfect scapegoats.
THE BOTTOM LINE
A mere glance at these eight trends do their consequences no justice. In the full version of the trendspotting, the social and digital trends are examined in greater detail, and under the microscope it becomes eerily clear just how big of an impact they will have on the world as we know it. If you’re living in 2017 and plan on heading further into the future, this trendspotting will serve as an excellent tour guide in getting you there. Because one thing is for certain: The world of tomorrow will be an exciting place—and it will be fundamentally different from that of today
